This is a really difficult question. I don’t think it’s ever necessarily OK to harm animals for any reason, but sometimes it becomes necessary for things like testing medication before human trials. If we want vaccines for things like coronavirus, then animal testing will probably be involved at some stage (at least, at the moment).
That being said, medical scientists are researching alternatives to using animals in this way, so hopefully in the future it won’t need to happen anymore.
