To pay the bills! Music is competitive and doesn’t necessarily pay that well (unless you are really good, which I am not). I thought my skills are better placed in science where I can get a reliable income and save money to spend on music and travelling in my spare time, or for a big adventure every few years.

Some companies will allow their employees to take a lot of time off (a sabbatical) and still have a job to come back to. This is good for travelling as you will have saved up some money, rather than travelling around on a shoestring.
