I’ve answered this question a lot, and the answer is always similar – I like how different they are from us, and the sheer amount of research that can be done. There could be over 5.5 million species of insect on the planet, more than any other type of animal, which means there is real scope to explore your interests and different aspects of the world around you. If you want to explore the soil, then there are insects there; if you’re interested in pollination and flowers (like me) then there are insects there… They’re also really cool individually. They have a massive range of behaviours that can be really surprising – like how there are some species of ants that farm aphids for the honeydew they produce, and how some insects form complex societies, like some of the bees and wasps.
